Hosted by Malcolm Meintjes (Author of Zambezi Tiger, Remarkable Fly fishing Destinations of Southern Africa and other titles) What are Tiger Quests? Tiger Quests are value-added, special packages designed to help accelerate the success rate of visiting fly fishers wishing to catch tiger fish on the Upper Zambezi River. Background Fly fishing Tiger Quests were started 10 years ago by well-known fly fisher author Malcolm Meintjes who has over twenty years of experience in catching tiger fish across the continent. He personally hosts these Quests giving of his invaluable knowledge of the waters of the Zambezi, Kasai Channel, Mambova Rapids, Indibi and Chobe. Many anglers who, having saved up for a lifetime trip, have found that, on a normal excursion of 4 - 5 days, they are often unable to come to grips with the deceptively powerful rivers such as the Zambezi, nor do they have insight into newer and different techniques or situations that can arise. Thus the Quests importantly offer accelerated learning of new techniques, tackle and flies etc and an opportunity within a shorter space of time to latch on to one of these renowned fish. Organising a Tiger Quest Traditional Quests are pre-arranged tiger fly-fishing trips for small groups of friends, colleagues, clients or family, wherein the group (4 - 10 anglers) request their own Quest at a time of their convenience. The usual stay is for 4 - 5 days (but longer if they wish to stay on) at the renowned Impalila Island Lodge, scene of many double-figure "striped water dogs" The Quest group, led by Malcolm, therefore is able to employ a mixture of advice, learning techniques - both traditional and modern – to fish on these world-famous waters. While wild fish are never predictable, the chance of coming to grips with a double-figure tiger is greatly enhanced - though landing them is a far more challenging affair! While the usual catch is for fish up to 6 lb. the Quests have yielded up more than their fair share of big tigers up to 16 lb. The camaraderie of a group is most enjoyable as Malcolm takes turns to share a boat and fish with you, demonstrating at first hand. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn by way of personal experience. After each fly fishing session, there are the feedback get-togethers, where the "team" shares information on the day - and digital photographs of the ones that did not get away.
