Namibian Copper Shark Fishing

The Skeleton Coast of Namibia is a fishing paradise set between the cold Atlantic Ocean and the unforgiving Namib Desert. Famous for its legendary tales of shipwreck and survival the region has a long and bitter history of survival. Namibia itself has just as interesting history, this once German colony is today a successful democracy and forms a vital role in promoting tourism into Southern Africa. Fishing forms one of the many attractions and combines effortlessly into packages that include; game viewing, desert adventure excursions, 4x4 routes and historical and cultural settlements, villages and cities.

Recreational fishing is very popular in Namibia with excellent fresh and saltwater species to be caught. Within this article we will try and offer a glimpse into the high adrenaline action of beach Shark fishing. Namibia boasts 1000 miles of coast line from South Africa in the South and Angola to the North. Here you will experience fishing beyond comparison. Described as, thrilling, backbreaking and the most awesome stand-up saltwater sports fishing you will ever encounter. The entire food chain is here in abundance. The waters are crammed full of baitfish (Pilchards and Mullets), feeding on these are a variety of pelagic fish, guitar fish, Steenbras, kob, skates, rays, spotted gully sharks and a variety of hound sharks. The main quarry is at the top of the food chain, the incredible bronze whaler (carcharihinus brachyurus). Reaching formidable weights of up to 150-200 pounds (Current record 400lb.) these copper sheened torpedoes deserve to be at the very top of every anglers hit list.

The best times are between January and April, international flights into Windhoek (Namibian capital) are followed by a four hour drive to Swakopmund. These transfers are normally carried out by local guides driving four wheel drive vehicles and trailers fully kitted and equipped for the local conditions. Most guides operate out of the town of Swakopmund, visitors can expect to travel distances of up to 100 miles in order to find the right water for a particular day. The local knowledge of these guides is critical, the long drives are well rewarded when the final destinations are reached. Initially most visitors find that catching the bait equals or betters any personal catch. 20lb. - 30lb. hound or spotted gully sharks caught are gutted and staked into the ground within the shore break. These carcasses give off a chum slick which quickly set off a blood and oil slick that the bronze whaler sharks find irresistible. This technique is very effective and in most cases the dorsal fins of bronzies can be seen in the shallows within minutes.

The tackle is heavy and robust, rods are one piece 14ft sets with a shortened butt section. The use of multiplier reels is a must, they sit low on the rod and leave just enough space for one hand hold, loaded with 30lb. monofilament.  Baits are large and provide a very un-aerodynamic cast with a 6 - 8oz sinker, an average cast of 50 - 100 yards will put you well into the target zone and guarantee a good shark. Either the gills of smaller sharks, mackerel heads, whole sardines or mullets are used as baits. The first sign of a take is the slightest of knocks on your line followed by a slow steady pull as the shark swims off to find another tasty tit bit to morsel on. At this point its best to let the shark collect all the slack while you drop your rod. As the line tightens the idea is to heave your rod back and set the hook several times to ensure a good setting. Watch in amazement as the rod buckles in your arms, the fight is on!

The initial runs are blistering as 200 - 300 yards of line are instantly stripped from your reel. This is the time where you either turn or slow down the shark or as in so many cases you simply watch as this powerful runs spools your reel leaving you speechless and bewildered on the hot sandy beach. If you were lucky enough to stop or turn the shark you now face a gruelling fight which can last as long as two solid hours. A fisherman's strength has no effect as bronze whalers are simply to strong to contend with. Patience and tactics and loads of endurance are the only ingredients which will pay off. To regain line, the proven tactic of clamping your clutch and slowly walking up the beach works well. You then regain line by walking down the beach retrieving your hard earned yards as you make your way to the waters edge. Often your heart sinks as the shark simply turns west and empties your reel of all your hard earned yards. Back to basics again and again until eventually you get the first glimpse of the shark as it silhouettes in the shore break waves. The final stages are often torturers as shallow reefs, debris and the bodies of other foraging sharks can cut through your highly pressured line. A final gaff behind the dorsal fin ensures your catch and also minimizes long term damage to the fish. Time to pose for that all important photo before getting your rig baited and ready for the bigger brother.

The Skeleton Coast can take enormous toll on your body, the obvious physical strain on catching these monsters puts your arms, legs, neck and back under tremendous pressure. Half way through a battle royal many anglers have questioned why they attempted this fete. Big sharks are often landed up to a mile away from where they were hooked, during these fights you are exposed to the elements and sunburn is often the most common reason for anglers having to retire from a days fishing. Suitable clothing, hats, gloves, foot and eye wear are essential. No fisherman should even think of venturing out without a healthy dose of effective sunscreen.

Catching the bronze whaler is a must for any serious fisherman. Namibia is a friendly country where the spirit of adventure runs high. Evenings are spent in social settings often around BBQs where the days thirst can be washed away by the local Windhoek Lagers or institutional Brandy and Coke. This is always a good time to soothe aching arms and listen to tall fisherman stories about the one that got away.
