PORT ST JOHNS
- Wild Coast, Eastern Cape

Port St Johns is,
undoubtedly, the jewel of the Wild Coast, an authentic piece of Africa at
the mouth of the Umzimvubu River, embedded in subtropical rainforests. Port
St. Johns is a popular holiday destination due to the excellent fishing
spots at the river and at the sea, and because you can do some normal
grocery shopping here, which is rare at the Wild Coast. Port St. Johns has
three beaches. The Second Beach, 5 kilometers east of the village center, is
the prettiest, surrounded by evergreen rainforest and wild banana trees.
It
is the fishing that will often be the most rewarding, again like so many
other Wild Coast locations, Port St Johns offers visitors quality fishing
across all facets. The mighty Umzimvubu River constantly yields quality
catches. Whether you are fishing from the river bank or from light
fiberglass boats, bait casting, live baiting, art lure or fly fishing, this
stretch of river and estuary holds many power house mysteries of the salt
water. The abundance of bait fish brings the large pelagic fish up river to
feast. Common catches include, Garrick, King and Queen Fish and Grunter. The
famous Zambezi Shark (freshwater tolerant) is a regular visitor to the River
Mouth and Estuary. Over the years record catches of Zambezi have been as
15Km inland.
Rock and Surf is just
as rewarding, there are a number of legendary points where Shark Fishing is
almost guaranteed. Pubs and hotels in the town are littered with photographs
of truly amazing rock and surf catches. The usual reef fish are abundant
from most points along the coast line. Deep sea fishing trips can be
arranged to target most internationally recognized Game Fish Species. Deep
water reefs also hold massive species such as
the
Brindle Bass amongst others. Deep sea fishing trips can be arranged with
planning and notice prior to arrival.
Port St Johns offers visitors a host of other activities including, 4x4 &
Quad Bikes Trips, Reef Diving, Beach and Mountain Hikes, Boat Trips and
Historical and Cultural tours of the indigenous Pondo Tribes.
